Ever since our first date, Logan and I have taken to the daily habit of meeting up for an afternoon walk through the park. Itâs not dinner and a movie, like Iâd prefer, but Iâll take these micro dates over nothing. Most of our conversations revolve around Isabel.
âThe best part about being a dad,â Logan says as weâre walking through the park one day, âis getting to watch her grow from being this tiny little thing that I could practically fit into the palm of my hand to becoming her own independent person. Sheâs going through this new phase right now where she insists on doing everything by herself, like getting dressed in the morning, even though she always puts her clothes on backward and her shoes on the wrong feet,â he laughs.
Even though Iâm still warming up to the idea of Logan being a single dad, I find it endearing the way he lights up when he talks about his daughter.
âAnd in the morning, she insists on making herself cereal for breakfast, even though she usually spills the milk everywhere.â
âThatâs cute,â I say.
âIt is,â agrees Logan. âBut we hit a really big milestone this summer.â
âOh, yeah? Whatâs that?â
âThis was the first summer she learned how to ride her bike without training wheels. She insists sheâs a big girl now because of it.â
âI bet sheâs excited to start Kindergarten.â
âYou have no idea. She canât wait to learn how to read.â
âShe seems like an amazing kid.â
âShe is,â agrees Logan. âThatâs the only hard part about being divorced, not getting to see Isabel every day.â
âHow has she been handling the divorce? Isabel, I mean?â
âSurprisingly well. But she was only three when Kaitlyn and I separated, so I donât think she has many memories of us together anyway.â
So, the ex has a name: Kaitlyn. I make a mental note of this. âHow do you think Kaitlyn would feel if you brought another woman around Isabel?â
âI donât think sheâd be thrilled,â says Logan, without hesitation. âI mean, I donât think anybody would be thrilled in that situation. But she canât expect me to stay single forever. To be fair, I donât expect her to stay single forever either.â
âYou donât think it would bother you if your ex brought another guy around Isabel?â
Logan purses his lips and shoves his hands in his pockets. âThe only thing I care about is Isabelâs well-being. The rest is none of my business. Thatâs why I think if Kaitlyn ever met you, she should have nothing to worry about.â
Just the idea of meeting Isabel and Loganâs ex stops me in my tracks. âWhat do you mean?â
Logan looks at me and smiles. âYouâre sweet. Youâre kind. And I can tell youâll make a great mom someday.â
My heart catches in my throat. I was hoping this topic wouldnât come up this soon, but why delay the inevitable? He needs to know. âWhat if I told you that I donât ever want kids?â
For a moment, Logan doesnât say anything. âWhy do you think you donât ever want kids?â
âI donât know.
